The Finnieston

The new OVO Hydro lies in a bit of a no man’s land when it comes to bars. Handily we’ve just trawled around the area surrounding Finnieston to unearth our Top 5 Finnieston Bars Near the OVO Hydro in Glasgow:

1. The Kelvingrove Café  – At the hub of the emerging Finnieston Strip’s bar and it’s social scene. Cocktails are their speciality and they come very much stirred and not shaken. Don’t even ask them to shake! They may not please international super agents, but they are damn tasty concoctions. The pick of the seats are the booths in the window. The cafe also serves excellent steaks and seafood, as well as great Sunday breakfasts.

2. Ben Nevis  – An old world Finnieston bar that specialises in malt whisky and what a section they have! They are particularly strong on single malts from Islay so if you fancy a pre-gig smoky dram this is the venue. As friendly and warm a traditional boozer as you’ll find. They’ve got regular live music too if you want to risk getting sidetracked and missing your own gig at the SSE Hydro.

3. The Grove – Very much an old school boozer and if you’re after a decent pint of Belhaven Best whilst catching the latest horse racing action just spitting distance from the SSE Hydro then this is the place to come. It’s cheaper than the new fangled places and quintessentially Glaswegian, with both plenty of character and plenty of local characters.

4. The Finnieston  – Run by Finnieston man with the plan Graham Suttle this is brilliantly fun gin bar. Cocktails are the main attraction, though they do some excellent seafood too. A Seafarer’s cocktail, made with seaweed infused Fino sherry, and half a dozen West Kilbride oysters anyone?

5. One of a Kind  – Opened late in 2013 this former pop up bar is painfully hip, but a lot of fun too. It all feels a little East Berlin with a practically hidden entrance, minimalist lighting and distressed décor. They stick true to their name and there really is only one of everything – only one gin (Hendricks), only one vodka (Luksusowa )…you get the idea!
