Perthshire is famous for its high class hotels, country house retreats and posh hunting, shooting and fishing lodges, but there is another side to one of Scotland’s most alluring regions too. You can opt for a simple self catering escape instead. A great value option that allows you to save some cash. Money that you can spend in Perthshire’s excellent restaurants and its multitude of visitor attractions.

Great Base

Cloag Farm Cottages lie just north of the village of Methven, which itself lies just seven miles west of Perth and easily accessible from all of Central Scotland. This is a great base for exploring further north into the Highlands too. The three cottages themselves sit on a ridge above the village offering sweeping views out over the Perthshire countryside, a view of rolling hills, forests and scattered villages.

Working Farm

The farm part of the name is no marketing spin. The trio of cottages are actually owned and run by the couple who own the farmhouse just along the track.

Our cottage, number one, was spot on. We could park outside by the bench where you could enjoy the sunshine and the views at the flower covered front of the stone cottage.

Inside we had a decent size living space, which boasted a coal fire, ideal for cosy nights in. This space also had a couple of sofas and a dining table for four, which is the most the cottage can sleep.

The kitchen was a simple affair, but had everything you needed to rustle up meals during your stay. The bedrooms meanwhile were split between one double bedroom and one twin. They were not large, but again had everything we needed. The bathroom was quite small, but a large bath and decent shower had recently been added.

Family  Entertainment

We spent much of our time exploring the surrounding countryside, but our evenings back at the cottage. As well as Freeview TV there were plenty of books to read, as well as board games, cards and a few children’s toys, with a cute wee touch, a toy tractor! One handy feature is a decent wifi connection, which is available for a small extra charge. There is plenty of decent walking just outside the front door of the cottage and there are also picnic benches for sunny meals out the back too.

Local Attractions

There is enough within easy driving distance to fill a month. Perth, Scotland’s ancient capital’, is just a short drive away with its great restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, making it a popular wet weather option. Historic Scone Palace is another great visitor attraction that can be enjoyed on rainy day. When the sun shines Perthshire is your oyster with numerous walking, hiking and active adventures. Traditionally the cottages have been rented out for one or two weeks, but showing impressive flexibility they are now also available for shorter breaks. So if you fancy a wee break that won’t cost the earth in a cosy cottage in rural Perthshire and the chance to stay on a farm then the Cloag Farm Cottages are ideal for you.
