An ingenious use of spices, innovative fusion menu, bright contemporary decor and a warm welcome are all part of the impressive cocktail that combines to make Voujon a serious contender to be Edinburgh’s finest Indian restaurant.

Bright and Contemporary

Already a much loved member of the Edinburgh dining scene, Voujon recently re-opened its doors after a major refurbishment as a bright and contemporary eatery. A frontage made almost entirely of glass leads into a dining room where an elegantly-lit bar , floor to ceiling wine rack and the bold use of the restaurant’s logo are among the striking design features.

Superb Indian and Bengali Food at Voujon

Voujon’s startling interior design was not the only thing to leave an impression. Indeed the Indian and Bengali food makes sure you concentrate fully on the plate.

A broad range of starters offered Indian classics alongside a more unique selection that included lentil soup with a tangy twist and spicy garlic mushrooms. Our chicken samosas were so tender that the meat melted in the mouth, while the platter of Voujon assorted kebabs let us sample succulent lamb and wonderfully tender chicken, with the perfectly balanced spices suiting everyone’s palate. Even the aforementioned soup was expertly cooked, with everyone at the table wanting to taste it.

Impressive Main Courses at Voujon

These were dishes that we thought would be hard to follow. Our main courses, however, were even more impressive. The generous serving of Chicken Buna (a medium spiced chicken curry cooked with onions, herbs and tomatoes) was so delicious that we polished off a side of pilau rice and a wonderfully fresh and puffy naan bread mopping up the juices.

Innovative Fusion Menu at Voujon

Having come to the restaurant keen to learn more about Voujon’s new fusion menu – designed to avoid the confusion that some diners feel when ordering Indian food, with the chef choosing the accompaniments to the dish  – we also opted for a fusion dish. In many Indian restaurants we would steer clean of ordering fish dishes. At Voujon, however, we wasted no time ordering the trout.

Our perfectly baked fish was served with a layer of aromatic vegetables, with the various herbs and spices permeating through the delicate pink flesh. Although they really awakened our tastebuds, the spices did not overpower the taste of the trout, instead enhancing it and giving us a unique dining experience.

Friendly Service at Voujon

The warm greeting that we received when we arrived and the friendly way that the waiters interacted with the children added to our enjoyment of our meal. Voujon means ‘invitation to dine’ and it is an invitation that you would be wise to take up.
