Not only is Galloway Forest Park one of the largest of its kind in Britain, it is also one of the darkest spots in the UK. So dark and unpolluted by ambient light in fact that it has recently won a Dark Skies Award. This makes it a great place to visit year round. If you are a serious stargazer with all the gear, or just want to ogle up at the heavens trying to work out which one is actually the real Plough then head here. The Galloway Astronomy Centre will soon have you au fait with all the constellations.

Outdoor Pursuits

By day you can hurl yourself around the Galloway Forest Park on a mountain bike, hike through the wilds or explore the rich local history as Robert the Bruce once hid away amongst the thick forests around Glen Trool. At least on the sleepless nights he endured plotting his route to ultimate victory at Bannockburn he could have enjoyed some of the best stargazing in Europe, just one of the reasons that Scotland should be proud of the Galloway Forest Park.
